SJCYFL _Let The Games Begin_08.03.09

Two weeks ago, on the 1st of March, the 2009 SJCYFL Boys’ League tournament was launched by our Subang Jaya Assemblywoman, YB Hannah Yeoh, who also generously contributed RM5,000 for the SJCYFL. On that day, friendly matches were played among the teams on the newly repaired field in Sekolah Menengah USJ4 school.

The games started with earnest last Sunday (8/3/09) at the USJ 4 School. It was a hot, hot day with the games for all the four divisions starting at 3.45 p.m. I refereed the first two matches for the Majors Division with Rama helping as linesman. The first match between Panthers against Rhinos ended with Rhinos winning 4 goals to nil. In the second match, the Sharks beat Hawks by three goals to nil. Lack of exercise and the heat took a toll on me and fortunately, Dr. Nasir agreed to referee the third match between Cheetahs and Wolves. In that game, Cheetahs emerged winners with a score of 3 to 1 goals.

2009 SJC Youth Football League_180109

Our 2009 SJCFL season started with the 1st registration at USJ 4 School Canteen today, 18th January 2009 from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. Chitra and I were there with the other Leadership Team members to help in the registration.

As previous years, we have four divisions according the age of the boys as below:
Born before 2001 - Junior Division
1999-2000 - Major Division
1997-1998 - Senior Division
1995-1996 - Premier Division

During the two hours of registration exercise, about 115 players registered. Our next registration date is scheduled to be 1st February, 2009.
Our calender for the 2009 season as below:
Feb 15 - Mandatory skills assessment for all registered players at 3 p.m.
Feb 25 - Team/coach selection announced & published on website.
Feb 28 - Mandatory parents clinic at 3 p.m.
Mar 1 - Launch day for 2009 Session. Season begins with exhibit games.
May 31 - One Day Tourney. End of Season.

YB Hannah hands 10K_11.09.08

I received an SMS from our Subang Jaya Community Sports Club (SJCSC) Coordinator, Farouk, this afternoon that YB Hannah, Subang Jaya Assemblyman, would be contributing ten thousand ringgit for the Sports Club's activities. We are to meet at her service centre at SS16 Subang Jaya at 9.45 p.m.

My wife, Chitra, who is our SJCSC Treasurer, and myself together with SJCSC members met YB Hannah and her husband, Ram, at her service centre to collect the cheque.

A big thank you to YB Hannah, for your support of our SJCSC activities. Your contribution would help us organise more activities such as scrabble competition etc for the Subang Jaya community for this year.

Farewell to Doug & Family_ 30.07.08

We would like bid farewell to Douglas Ladner and his family who are moving to Penang this month. For those who do not know Douglas, he is one of the founder members of the Leadership Team who started the Subang Jaya Youth Football League in 2000.

Legend has it that Douglas and family came to Malaysia from USA in 1992. Douglas, who is currently the Director of Development of Global Sports Partner, was based in Penang and Indonesia from 1992 to 1998. Doug and his family moved to Subang Jaya in 1998.

In the year 2000, the idea of setting up a community-based boy’s football league was conceived during a “teh tarik” session between Douglas and a few of his friends. From a humble beginning of 145 boys from Standard One through Six, the league has grown to over 250 players represented in the four age based divisions (U8, U10, U12, U14) across fourteen teams in 2008. What sets this league apart from other league is the emphasis of the league’s core values, i.e. discipline, unity, teamwork, service, family and sportsmanship rather than winning football matches.

Chitra and I have the privilege of getting to know Doug and his family when we got involved with the boys football league with Rama’s participation in the Majors Division in 2000. From the beginning, we were motivated by this energetic and passionate American who kept reminding everyone of the league’s core values and the spirit of volunteerism.

Over the years, whenever there were conflicts between the LT members, Doug would always be there to try to resolve these disagreements through his long speeches sprinkled with some Malay words and his even longer emails. For his attributes in building relationships, I have always regarded Douglas as our guardian of the league’s core values.

Douglas will always be in his element organizing the annual League’s Service Project, “Sejambak Kasih.” Over the past years, together as families and teams, we would gather foodstuffs and distribute hundreds of food hampers (packed in boxes) for needy families through charitable organizations.

Douglas has also been a great advocate for the development of Ultimate Frisbees among the students in Subang Jaya and ultimately in Malaysia through his promotion and association with various Government bodies.

We are also very grateful for his persistent efforts in the repair of the USJ4 school field with the involvement of MPSJ, Subang Jaya Assemblyman, Sime Darby and the school authorities which has cultimated with the construction works currently being done at the field.

We, along with other LT families, dropped by to visit Doug and family on 13th July 2008 to bid farewell. We had a pizza party and reminisced about old times.

Doug, we bid you and your family the best of luck and best of everything. We shall miss you especially your wisdom, enthusiasm and positive outlook in any situations.

1st Outing for 2008 Majors Select Team_19.07.08

This report was written by our dedicated SJCYFL Majors Division Head, En. Abdul Qadir Jilani Abu Bakar. Good outing for our Majors Select Team Players. Best of luck for their next tournament in August 9th and 10th in Shah Alam.

Today the SJCYFL's 2008 Majors Select Team participated in their first under-10 football tournament organized by MPAJ-Bintang Muda (formerly YFA). They headed off to a great start by beating their first two opponents by a two-goal margin. First they beat the Brazillian Soccer Centre with goals by Seanjev Tan and Kuhan Raj. Sean's goal was down to sheer persistence as he pressured the opposing defender and stabbed the ball pass their goalkeeper to open the scoring. The second goal was Kuhan's opportunity to demonstrate to the "Brazilians" the kind of individual dribbling skill that he possessed as he samba'ed past a few players before putting in a great finish for the second goal.
The day's scoring responsibilities for the team were shared as Connor Jennings and Kishenthiran got into the act in the second match against Bintang Biru-B from Penang. Connor unleashed an unstoppable shot from outside the goalkeeper's box for the first goal (...his dad owes him a trip to McD's for that). Kishen then made the opponents pay for bringing Kuhan down just outside the box with a glorious freekick over the opponent's wall. Aaron Tan, the goalkeeper, together with Muhammad Adri Razam and Brendan Michael formed a formidable wall in defence which could not be penetrated.

Then came the game with the group favorites, MBPJ. All knew it was going to be a tough match and true enough, they hit early with a goal from a freekick that sailed out of Aaron's reach into the top right corner. But if not for Aaron's amazing goalkeeping feats after that, there would definitely have been more goals for the opponents. At the end, it was just too hard for the forwards to penetrate their strong midfield and defence. The coach, Paul Vannan, introduced some new legs in Benjamin Tee but it was not enough to stop the team from going down 0-1.All was not lost because there were still two more group matches to be played.

Nevertheless, the day was getting hotter and by the time the team took on Bintang Muda Sungai Buloh B, it was already noon and matches were about an hour behind schedule. Even though the opponents were seen to be the weaker team in the group, the boys just could not find it in them to put the ball in the net. The match ended scoreless and everyone started wondering if the team would pay the price for this. It effectively meant that a win in the final match was necessary to ensure progress into the quarter finals.
This scenario set up a must-win match for both teams, SJCYFL vs MPAJ-YFA A (the tournament organizers first team). The match began quite tense with both sides aggressively trying to score first. It resulted in the most controversial moment for SJCYFL and possibly the turning point when a shot at goal appeared to have crossed the goal line before the YFA goalie secured it. The referee, however, did not award a goal because perhaps he could not see the ball cross with certainty from where he was standing (...I'm sure this incident would be a hot topic for discussion at the next FIFA committee meeting - use linesmen at tournaments or introduce goal line technology!!!) Almost immediately after that YFA counter attacked and through a sweeping 1-2 move by their strikers, the ball barely went into the SJCYFL goal after hitting the left post.The devastation of getting behind, the disallowed goal and the scorching heat proved too much for the team to overcome. The 0-1 lost meant the team was going home early. Some, like Aaron, were inconsolable but after Coach Paul's closing talk, they went back with their heads held high having put on a good representation for SJCYFL. They executed the coach's game plan as instructed, including the reserves, Tan Zi Ling, Nik Muhammad Hazim and Benjamin Tee who waited patiently for their chance and played their hearts out whenever the coach called on them.
Having their first taste of tournament football this year certainly created a hunger in all ten players for more action in future tournaments (... and for food because they have not gotten a proper lunch at that point) and hopefully will drive them harder to be selected for the next event on August 9 & 10 in Shah Alam.

p/s The parents/family members should be commended too for patiently sitting through the day's events. If this article doesn't appear in the mainstream press tomorrow or someone's blog site (you know who you are coz' I cc'ed you), please let your sons read this email to show that we're proud of each of them for the role they played and being an important member of the team.

SJCYFL One Day Tournament_25.05.08

The final event for our SJCYFL Boys Football League was the One Day Tournament (ODT)which was held at Alice Smith School, Puchong on 25th May 2008. This whole day event also includes activities for the whole family and the prize giving ceremony.
Chitra and myself were not able to attend the tourney the whole day due to Rama's participation in the 3rd Malaysian Youth Scrabble Competition which was held in Berjaya Times Square, K. Lumpur on the same day.

I dropped by for a few hours to join in the fun and festivities.

SJC Youth Football League_10.05.08

Two Major division matches were played in SK Seafield today starting at 3.00 p.m. Our Technical head, Ari, called this morning to help in refereeing the matches. As usual, I brought along my referee's assistant, Ramaraj. My son who is 16 years have outgrown the age limit of the SJCYFL Premier age group of 14 years for the Premier two years ago but still misses the football league. Whenever there is an opportunity to get involved, he volunteers to help. Before the matches, he was training his cousin, Naveen, of the Junior division King's team some goalkeeping moves.

The first Major match was between Sharks and Rhinos. It was an even matched game with Sharks having more opportunities in front of the goalpost. Rhino's goalkeeper, Hazim, made some good saves to earn his team a well deserved point when the game finished in a 0-0 draw. The players, coach and parents were ecstatic at end of the match as this was their first point in the league after eight straight losses.

The second Major division match was between Wolves and Panthers. The game was played from end to end with a couple of shots hitting the post. Panthers managed to score twice to win with a score of 2-0.

Meanwhile, in the Junior's Division match between Kings and Rangers at 3 p.m. ended with a 4-0 win for Kings. Rama and myself missed the win for my nephew's team. We were told that Naveen played well, diving to save the goals, probably due to the training by Ramaraj.

The draw for the One day tournament was held at 5.00 p.m. in the same school canteen. The team managers of all three Divisions attended the draw for the pairing of the teams into two groups. The organisers decided not to seed any teams to make the draw more interesting. Farouk, our League Coordinator, started the meeting by explaining the schedule for the One Day Tournament on 25.05.08 to be held in Alice Smith School. Mary, who is in-charge of the events for the parents and children, then explained about the events. There would be a 11 aside tug of war for the fathers and mothers. The draw was conducted by Dr. Nasir and Mary with the team managers drawing lots.

SJC Youth Football League_04.05.08

The Junior division rematch between Archers and Kings was played at SRK Seafield at 3 p.m. this Sunday. Archers once again were attacking the King's goalpost from the start. Their first goal came within five minutes when Lekshman score from a kick in. Lekshman and his teammates outplayed the Archers and won the match by 3-0 scoreline. Archer's star player, Lekshman, scored all the goals.

The next match in the Junior Division was between Wizards and Elves. I only refereed half the match. It was a difficult match to referee as the Wizard's coach kept questioning the decisions and harassing with his remarks. Wizards eventually lost to a well organised Elves by 4-0.

SJC Youth Football League (SJCYFL)_ 26.04.08

Firstly about our Subang Jaya Community Youth Football League. The football league was formed by a group of parents in Subang Jaya in 2001 to provide opportunity for boys to play football while the parents get involved as coaches, assistant coaches, team managers, scorekeepers or general volunteers.

The league gives the parents an opportunity to get involved in the lives of their children and interact with other parents in the community.

The spirit of volunteerism is the foundation for the league’s success which has grown to participation of more than 250 boys playing for 30 teams divided into Junior (U-8), Major (U-10), Senior (U-12) and Premier (U-14) divisions.

Chitra and myself got involved in the League when Ramaraj started playing in the Major Division in 2001. Unfortunately, Ramaraj outgrew the league age limit of U14 (Premier) in 2006. We continued helping out in the running of the League. Chitra is currently the Treasurer of the Subang Jaya Community Sports Club.

Majors match between Sharks and Wolves was played at SRK Seafield at 3 p.m. It was a hot, hot afternoon. The games were rescheduled to be played earlier in the afternoon to avoid the thunderstorm in the late afternoon. The game ended in a draw 2-2 after an evenly contested match.

The Junior division match between Archers and Kings took place at the same school at 4 p.m. Archers are the top team in the division and got down to business by attacking the Kings goalpost from the whistle. My nephew, Naveen, had the unenviable task of stopping Archers as the goalkeeper. Archers eventually won by 2-0 score despite some heroic defending by Muhammad Aref and Naveen.
