CIMB Scrabble To School Selangor Programme (Secondary Schools)_24.04.10

The final part of the ‘CIMB Scrabble to School Selangor Programme' was conducted at Sek. Men. Dato' Hamzah. Pelabuhan Klang on 24th April 2010, by Malaysian Scrabble Association. This was the follow up to the scrabble workshop for secondary schools conducted to four students and teacher from 25 schools held on 27th March 2010. The 'CIMB Scrabble to School Programme' is sponsored by CIMB Foundation.

The school students from 20 secondary schools took part in competitive scrabble by playing five rounds of inter school competition. The first round of the inter school tourney commenced at 9.30 a.m.

In the final round, SMK Sg. Pelek emerged champions after drawing 2-2 with SMK (P) Bukit Kuda, Klang, finishing with 16 points each but with better spread. SMK (P) Bukit Kuda and SMK Sri Istana emerged first and second runners up with 16 points and 14 points respectively.

The closing ceremony was conducted at 4.30 p.m. Trophies were given for the first three finishers. Certificates of participation were given to all the players who took part.

CIMB Junior Circuit Selangor InterSchool U-18 Scrabble Competition_17.04.10

It was another weekend of scrabble. The Junior Circuit Inter School U-18 Scrabble Competition for Selangor was held in SMK Dato' Hamzah, Pelabuhan Klang on 17th April 2010. It was the biggest gathering of U-18 scrabble players for the Junior Circuit to date, with 91 players from 21 schools, taking part in this one-day tourney.
It was a strong field consisting of players who have represented Malaysia in the previous World Youth Scrabble Competitions i.e Jagan and Chang Ching Yet from SMK Seafield, Subang Jaya, and William Kang from SMK Subang Utama, Subang Jaya. Upcoming players who took part included Cheong Yi Wei from SMJK Chung Ling, P. Pinang and Vinnith from SMK Seafield.

Seven rounds of scrabble competition were played. William Kang was unbeaten for the first six rounds but was pipped by Jagan, who beat him in the final round, to claim the Champion position. Jagan and William Kang ended with six points each but Jagan had a better margin of 1189 points compared to William's 1060. For the next three positions from third to fifth, Vinnith (841 margin), Christopher Chan (428 points) and Ernest Chiew (370 points) also managed to finished with six points. S. Krishnapriya, who managed to finish a respectable eleventh position.

A total of 25 players together with additional wildcard players would be invited to take part in the CIMB Junior Circuit National Interschool U-18 Scrabble Competition to be held on the 5th and 6th June 2010 at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur.
All the participants were given a certificate of participation and the top five finishers were awarded trophies. The teachers who accompanied the students were invited to collect the certificates at the closing ceremony.

CIMB Scrabble To School Selangor Programme (Primary Schools)_10.04.10

The second part of the ‘CIMB Scrabble to School Programme” for the primary schools was conducted at Sek. Men. Dato' Hamzah. Pelabuhan Klang on 10th April 2010. This is the follow up to the scrabble workshop conducted to four students and teacher from 25 primary schools held on 6th March 2010. The school students from 22 primary schools had their first taste of competitive scrabble by playing four rounds of inter school competition.
The MSA team consisted of Martin Teo, Chitra, Cedric, Priya & myself for this event. Registration started at 8.30 a.m.

After four rounds of scrabble competition, SK Bukit Tinngi team emerged champions with 14 points and spread of 891 followed by SK Bukit Kapar with 13 points and spread of 266. The second runners up winners were SK Methodist ACS who finished with 11 points with 391 spread. Certificates of participation were given to all the players who took part.

It was an enjoyable and tiring day for everyone involved in the competition. Thank you to the teachers who brought the students and waited patiently until the end of the competition.
