2009 SJC Girls' Futsal League_28.06.09

The first round of matches for the 2009 SJCGFL commenced this Sunday. Even though we were still short of players for some of the teams, the games have to go on.

This season, since Team Emerald did not have a coach, I had to come out of 'retirement' to coach the team. For the record, the last time I coached was in year 2004, in charge of Priya's team , Opal, when we emerged as Champions for Majors Division. After that, I had to retire as I was too busy organizing and refereeing the matches. Hopefully the 'new' coach in town would have the same success again!

For the Majors Division, the first match between Emerald and Citrine ended in a goalless draw. Both the team had their chances to score but they were thwarted by the good goalkeeping. The second match was between Amber and Turquoise. Both teams played with four players as one player from each team did not turn up. It was an entertaining match with plenty of goals. Amber managed to outscore Turquoise by 6 goals to 4 goals.

In the Seniors Division, Team Garnet beat Team Jade by 2 goals to nil. Both the goals were scored by Mayday in the 2nd and 4th quarters. In the second game, Team Sapphire managed to beat Team Opal by 3 goals by nil.

It was goals galore in the Premier Division. Team Diamond scored 7 goals against Team Amethyst who managed to score one goal only. In the second match, Ruby beat Topaz by 5 goals to nil, all scored by Nurul Atiqa.

I am unable to report the games in detail as I had to coach a team for the first match and referee the other in the Majors. Hopefully some parents watching the Premiers and Seniors, would pen a few words for the website.

2009 SJC Girls’ Futsal League_21.06.09

After last week's registration exercise and players' skills assessment, we conducted our Volunteer Orientation and Coaching Clinic this week at 1.00 p.m. at U One Sport Center.

Our Girl's league follows the same concept as the Boy's League where the fathers would serve as coaches and mothers as team managers. We also invited some volunteers to coach the teams where the fathers were not available.
The orientation for the team mangers and volunteers were conducted by Ida. They were briefed on their roles and responsibilities in assisting the Committee to achieve a smooth-running and well-participated league season.

Ari, our Technical Head, conducted the coaching clinic by briefing the coaches on the rules and guideline drawn up for our girls' futsal. For the first time in our league, we are proud to have two female volunteer coaches who were our former players i.e Denisa Khoo and Claudine Lee. Denisa and Claudine would be coaching Team Sapphire and Team Citrine respectively. The players were excited at the prospect of being trained by their seniors.

The coaches, team managers and other volunteers were also encouraged to reinforce our League's Core values to the players i.e. Unity, Teamwork, Discipline, Sportsmanship, Service and Family.

Based on the registration and player's assessment carried out last week, the players were placed into teams in their respective divisions according to their skills, age and race. We have three divisions of Majors, Seniors and Premiers. Each division has four teams consisting of 5 players with 2 reserves for each team.

Presently we have a total of 55 registered players for the three divisions. Our Organising Committee has been calling former players and distributing flyers prepared by Farouk. We have passed the word around that we still need more players for the league.

The players underwent training from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. with their respective teammates and coach. The players' roster shall be distributed to the players and parents by next week, once we have enough players registered.

National School U-18 Scrabble Competition_06.06.09

MSA organized the National School U-18 Scrabble Competition which was held at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur on 6th – 7th June 2009. 82 players from 16 schools from throughout the country took part in this tournament playing 15 rounds of scrabble in two days.. The Champion would qualify automatically to represent Malaysia for the 2009 World Youth Scrabble Competition (WYSC) which would be held in Johor Bahru in December. In addition, the top twenty finishers would be invited for the MSA National Youth competition in September for the selection of the Malaysian representatives of 2009 WYSC.
We were all involved in the competition. Rama took part as one of the six players representing SMK Seafield, Subang Jaya. I was the co-coordinator for the competition with Martin Teo. Chitra and Priya were tournament helpers, taking care of the scrabble sets and clocks. Chitra also helped mail the invitations for the competition to 45 schools. The Tournament Director was Alex Tan, MSA Vice President.

The prizes were sponsored by Mattel Southeast Asia Pte. Ltd (Malaysia). We managed to give a total of 19 prizes (3 top prizes, 14 consolation prizes, 1 highest word and 1 youngest player award). Another 10 prizes were given out during the rounds as spot prizes.

Tournament Prizes
The players played eight games on Saturday and another seven on Sunday. Rama was in awesome form winning all his eight games in the first day. In the second day, he won six games losing only one to Ong Suanne, winning a total of fourteen points with a spread of 1847. He also won the Highest Word prize with the word “TYROSINE” scoring 154 points.
Rama also earned automatic qualification to represent Malaysia for the 2009 WYSC. Unfortunately, he would not be able to take part this year as the tournament dates are clashing with his S.P.M. examination.

Rama Vs Scott Chung (Round 10)
The second placing went to Chang Ching Wei, followed by Ker Jen Ho, Scott Chung, William Kang and Ong Suanne.

Thank you to Dr. Adele Tan, President of MSA and other Committee Members i.e. Jocelyn, Henry Yeo and Chim who helped out during the competition.

Due to the upcoming S.P.M. exams, this would probably be Rama’s last tournament for this year. Furthermore, next year he would not qualify for WYSC as he would be above 18 years old. Alas, Rama bows out from the U18 tournaments as a Champion.
